Training

The fleet runs a Newcomers Training Weekend event at the start of the season, aimed at less experienced sailors or those new to the class. For the last few years this has been held at Grafham Water in Cambridgeshire in late March. This venue combines the benefits of excellent facilities with easy launching and recovery and very good rescue cover. See the Events Calendar for dates and times of this year’s training event.

Schedule

Saturday consists of theory sessions, practical demonstrations and on-the-water exercises (wind permitting!) You’ll learn about boat set-up and tweaking tips for how to get the best out of the boat. There are also coach boats for one-to-one tuition on boat handling with video debriefing, and a few short fun races for good measure. Later, in the bar or over dinner, there’s a chance to meet the fleet, get the lowdown on key 4000 venues, or pick the brains of the more experienced helpers.

Sunday takes the form of a mini open meeting, with three upwind / downwind races (with prizes), including some coaching on the water and debriefing afterwards. There is less pressure than at a normal open meeting, but hopefully by the end of the weekend you’ll feel up to the challenge of the open circuit. At the very least you’ll feel much less intimidated by club racing and start to really enjoy your boat. Don’t worry if you haven’t got a crew or if your regular sailing partner can’t make it, as we can normally pair you up with someone, particularly if you let us know in advance.

You can see a copy of a Training Weekend Presentation here.

There is also lots of information about how to rig, tune and sail the boat in all weathers on the Sailing/Tuning page of this website.
